Models Prep Your Lips Before Your Shoot!

One thing you don’t want during your photo-shoot is have your lipstick move all over.  And when you place your lipstick on, just like when you prime your face for your foundation. You must prep your lips. MAC Prep and Prime Lip is what I would recommend and go to for all my photo-shoots. A color free base to wear under lipstick. Adds light moisture, smooths and refines the lips. Improves the appearance of applied lip products.

There is no greasy feel to the product and just apply it while you are doing your foundation and then just gently pat your lips before applying your lip color.

  • Reduces lipstick feathering
  • Provides long-term hydration
  • Fragrance-free
  • Oil-free
  • Dermatologist tested

A lot of woman will place a chap stick on there lips to prime them. Which is a NO-NO. This will give you a oily appearance even when you pat the chap stick off. And the lipstick will not adhere to the lips. Don’t try this method use a primer. Another way of taking of dry flakes from the lips is use some scotch tape to the lips and this will also gently pull off the flaky skin. Also if you use a dark colored lipstick to dry lips, it will appear darker in certain areas because of flaking. So always use a primer for the lips.  This will also hydrate the lips also.

  • Apply a thin coating over entire lip area and over lip edges.
  • Follow with lip color.
  • If desired, line lips.

Preparing My Model For Her Next Photo-Shoot!

Getting a model prepared for a photo-shoot is a lot of fun and joint cooperation. Some models who are serious about there portfolio. And they will go to the ends of the earth to prepare for a schedule job.  And believe me it is a job, hair makeup, wardrobe, skin etc.  I go through a system for all my models. I run a add on model mayhem for all new models looking for photographs. I provide there wardrobe, a MAC Makeup class. Which we will get all needed cosmetics for the photo-shoot. that will match there outfit. I normally like to get dresses for my models. And I also like to use props for them, instead of doing the same old portrait shooting.  I have been a hairdresser/makeup artist for 30 years and started doing photography 7 years ago.

My models photo-shoot is at the end of the month and it was every important to get the right makeup formula’s. We used MAC Makeup foundation Studio Face and Body Foundation., Studio Fix Smooth Wear Concealer, for the face.  Mac Makeup Brow set for the eyebrows, 3D Black Lash Mascara, Studio Fix Sculpt and Shape Contour Palette in Dark to Medium Tones.  The contour palette was also used for the eye shadows and highlighting on the brow bone.  Always remember to learn how to manipulate your makeup kit for all uses.  For the lips we used Retro Matte Lipstick and also as a pencil for the lips. All MAC products were used for this makeup up session. And I would highly recommend using this line for photography, the product will not move or dissipate in color tones.  But most of all you really have to clean the face and also in photography you have to use a primer for the outdoors. Especially in this Central Florida weather, or the makeup will melt off.

I like to buy my wardrobe from the following online clothing stores.

All these company’s provide lovely outfits for all times of the year.  All wardrobe is provide for free to all the models including hats, accessory’s, shoes.  I feel it is very important to script your photo-shoots and have the proper makeup that fits your model. By doing all of these before a photo-shoot then you will have a winning session. I feel through experience. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare.  Photo’s will becoming soon for her next photo-shoot at the end of the month.

Model Using Mac Makeup For January Photo-Shoot

My first model for the new year is wearing a dress from Fashion-Nova.com a maxi-dress.  Also all of her cosmetic jewelry was from the same company. Before I do a photo-Shoot I like to have a makeup class to get the right colors for the shoot. A lot of times makeup outdoors will depend on the natural lighting given that day.  So I went for a natural application of MAC Makeup.  For all the makeup artists and hairdressers that read my blog you can go to any MAC store and book a 1 1/2 makeup class for you and your model.  It cost only $90.00 for the class and your model will get tons of samples to go home with. Also if you are a makeup artist or hairdresser you can apply for a MAC-PRO card and receive 30% off your purchases.

The first product we used was MAC Studio Face and Body Foundation, my model has freckles and I did not want to cover them up. I just wanted to get some coverage for the photography. Some tone to the skin. , Studio Fix concealer was also used to subdue any blue around the eyes. as you see below. NW24 was used for the application.  Both products have a very creamy consistency. And application was a breeze, without any feeling of full coverage.  A comfortable, lightweight fluid foundation with a unique blend of emollients that delivers sheer coverage and a satin finish. The moisturizing, long-wearing formula glides onto the face and body providing stay-true color.

We used a natural  eye shadow palette for the eyes, just to give the eyes a slight tone of color to them. This palette is called, “Amber Times Nine” also by Mac Makeup.  This well-edited palette features a color wave of amber hues that offer countless shade combinations. It provides an array of textures from matte to satin to frost for creating a variety of looks for both day and night. The saturated, soft and smooth hues are all packaged in one compact for easy portability.

Shade Description

  • Cozy Grey: Cool-grey (Matte)
  • Kitties: Pale bronze (Frost)
  • Georgia Peach: Dirty rose pink (Matte)
  • Rice-paper: Peachy gold with shimmer (Frost)
  • Creative Copper: Light beige (Luster)
  • Cork: Muted golden brown (Satin)
  • Don’t Tell: Sparkly brown (Luster)
  • Aromatic: Matte brown (Matte)
  • Pepper Please: Sparkly bronze copper brown (Velvet)

Shape and Shade Brow tint was used to detail the eyebrows and to give the shape and color.  Shape + Shade Brow Tint fuses the power of liquid and powder in a dual-ended product designed to define and set brows with ease. Fill brows effortlessly using the precision brush-tipped liquid liner on one end, then flip to the sponge on the other end to set your shape with the mess-free powder contained in the cap. This wax-infused powder makes brows smoother and gently holds them into place.

For our cheek powder we used Warm Soul BY MAC Makeup. Designed by and for professionals, formulated to provide fantastic color with ease and consistency. Applies evenly, adheres lightly to skin to achieve a natural-looking application of color. and also our lipstick we used was also a MAC product call, “Jubilee”.  M·A·C Lipstick – the iconic product that made M·A·C famous. This lightweight formula glides easily with sheer-to-medium coverage and a lustrous finish.

Shine Nectar For My Photo-Shoot Model

Over the weekend I had a photo-shoot with a very talented model who came down from Michigan. She had ethnic Hair and I wanted separation and shine to the hair for this photo-shoot. I used Shine Nectar from Jack Winn.  For separation and shine. The product did not weight the hair down at all. Nor did it make it greasy. Very easy to work with. The product had a very light scent to it.  A clean scent. Lovely. Great for styling the hair and for shine.

The makeup for this photo-shoot was MAC Makeup. Location of this photo-shoot was in Orlando, Florida.

Redken Hair Color Change For Fall

This Model was prepared for her Photo-Shoot this week and requested a deeper color all over. I also suggested that it would be a good idea since the hair was dry and brittle from constant overlapping and flat ironing.  When ever you use a curling iron or flat iron. Always prep the hair with a styling lotion and dry all of the hair thoroughly. Section your hair and curl or straighten it and use a dry hair spray on each section to protect it.  Don’t use any products with moisture in it.

A level 4.3 and 6.4 was mixed for the new-growth and also the same formula for the mid shaft and ends of the hair. With varying developer strengths. Shea Moisture Cosmetics was used to wash and condition the hair. And for styling the hair. Excellent product to work with. There was no color gloss’s added to the hair of the completion of the permanent hair color service.  Mac Makeup was used for her Photo-Shoot.  The Photo-Shoot was held on Melbourne Beach Florida.

Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight Perfecting Balm

Kellner
Excellent product for those salon smooth blow outs. And I would recommend it also for home use.  I like to try out store-bought products and this does the job for salon use and this product has the strength to really give you a salon blow-out. Smooth things out with Hair Expert Smooth Intense Creme. Not only does the treatment add sleekness to every strand of your hair but it also protects leaving your mane less prone to heat styling damage.

I really like the Straight Perfecting Balm. Most balms that help protect against heat are sticky and leave hair feeling like it has a filmy or thick texture but this balm completely absorbs into hair leaving it smooth and weightless. I love that not only does it help protect against heat it also makes hair easier to style and straighten and helps keep it straight for longer. It perfectly pairs with the other products in the Ultimate Straight Line and I would recommend to any one who straightens hair often or needs extra help to get hair straight.  And also the product has a lovely scent to it. Give it a try. Just take a quarter size amount for medium to long hair. Stay away from the scalp and only apply from mid shaft to ends. Comb through the hair with a wide tooth comb.  Gen at least half of the moisture out of the hair then apply a brush to sectioned hair. Use medium heat for blow drying the hair.  Once a section is dry apply a cool blast from your blow dryer to take away any fly away hairs. I like to use thermal roller brush’s to blow dry the hair. For a more formal look I like to use Boar bristle brush’s.  Once the hair if fully dried apply a small amount of the creme to the tips of your finger and brush through the hair. Iron in curls if necessary for the style you are looking for. And you are finished.  The product was used on the model pictured above and MAC Makeup was also used for her photo-shoot.

Superbe Superbe Superbe! Radical Volume Spray!

Joseph Kellner

Another great product to work with is the Volume spray by KIN COSMETICS.  Very simple product to use you can blow dry the hair fully with it starting with damp hair. Or as I like to use it on dry hair and dry setting. This will not leave the hair with a dry feeling to it. As all hairdressers know we can feel if a product is good or bad by only the touch.  The product had a very light scent to it nor was there a smell of alcohol to the spray. Below is a photograph of the model before her finished work.  This is a very simple and useful tool for any client’s bathroom or salon usage. For me it will go in my tool kit for when I am on location for film work or editorial.

Just a simple shampooing of the hair, no conditioner was used.

Hand dried hair. No product used.  Hair was then set to the criteria of the photo-shoot.

While the hair was placed in rollers makeup was completed.  MAC Makeup was used for this photo-shoot.

When the make was done the hair was sprayed again with the Volumizing spray and let dry for about 5 minutes.

I ran my brush through the hair and WELLAH! Finished product is below. Excellent Product! Photo shoot was done for Georgina Bridals of South Beach.
